As recruiters, we’ve spoken to many professionals who are open to new opportunities even
though they aren’t actively looking to leave their current employer. These candidates are often
the ones most likely to receive a counteroffer after resigning.
The question is, does accepting a counteroffer really solve the reason you started looking
elsewhere?
In most cases, people don’t explore new opportunities because of salary alone. More often, it’s a
combination of factors such as:
 Feeling undervalued or underpaid
 Limited career progression
 Poor leadership or management
 Long working hours or poor work-life balance
 Lack of challenge or career fulfilment
 Workplace politics or culture
 A long or difficult commute

A salary increase may be welcome, but it does’t automatically address these underlying issues.
Before accepting a counteroffer, take a moment to reflect on what motivated your job search in
the first place. Has anything genuinely changed, or is your employer simply reacting to your
resignation?
Here are a few reasons to think carefully before accepting a counteroffer:
1. The reasons you wanted to leave are unlikely to disappear overnight.
2. A new employer recognizes your potential and is willing to invest in your future.
3. Career growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone.
4. If your employer can suddenly increase your salary, why wasn’t your contribution
recognized earlier?
5. Accepting a counteroffer can sometimes affect how your long-term commitment is
perceived.
6. Many professionals who accept counteroffers end up restarting their job search because
the original concerns remain unresolved.

Every situation is different, and accepting a counteroffer isn’t always the wrong decision.
However, it’s important to think beyond the immediate financial benefit and consider what will
make you happier and more fulfilled in the long term.
If you decide to stay, make sure any commitments around salary, promotion, flexibility, or career
development are confirmed in writing. If you choose to move on, leave professionally and
maintain good relationships. In today’s world, your professional reputation and actions can open
doors long after you’ve changed jobs.
